BEING A SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE

How we’re looking to improve our sustainability as a practice

Sustainability is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as ‘the use of natural products and energy in a way that does not harm the environment’. [1] Sustainability and more sustainable practices have become much more important and widespread in recent years, and it is something that we are hugely passionate about at Acres.

We have written previously about ‘Eco Architecture’, also termed ‘Sustainable Architecture’, on our blog (https://www.acresarchitects.co.uk/what-is-eco-architecture). Eco Architecture is something that we are hugely interested in at Acres and would love to take on more projects within this area.

Becoming a sustainable practice is a priority for Acres and our team, we are constantly looking at ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. Previously we have taken part in a number of initiatives including the ‘no Christmas card’ initiative. Instead of sending a physical card we sent a digital version instead. The amount of Christmas cards thrown away in a typical year could cover Big Ben approximately 260,000 times, which is a phenomenal amount of waste!

Within the office we also try our best to improve our sustainability individually, for example using reusable water bottles,  we keep printing and paper use down to a minimum, and we recycle all suitable waste.

In addition to these initiatives, which all contribute, we ensure we build sustainability into our designs. We consider everything to reduce the amount of energy needed in a property, from the actual building materials needed to the heating and lighting of the property. We design our projects in a way to meet the clients requirements in the most environmentally friendly way. This can be done by clever use of materials and positioning of a building on a site to make the most of natural light and heat from the sun.

There are many ways in which you can improve your sustainability and carbon footprint – such as unplugging any appliances that are not being used, switching off lights in empty rooms, recycling, sharing transport or using public transport, and trying to cut out plastic – all of which may seem insignificant, but can make a massive difference.

Together we can make a difference.

If you’re looking to start a project we’d love to hear from you.
