Planning approved on a fantastic Grade II listed building with a contemporary twist

We are delighted to announce that our latest contemporary design private dwelling has been approved under delegated powers by Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Planning Department after a 12 month Conservation and planning collaboration on this fantastic site in a very picturesque south Nottinghamshire Village Location.

The existing site consisting of a Grade II listed Barn building, and existing single storey brick build garage building, has sweeping views over the south Nottinghamshire green belt. A fantastic collection of further barn buildings and courtyard walling to create a truly unique and bespoke proposal.

The project began when Acres Architects were approached by the owners of the property and challenged us to create ‘a truly contemporary twist on a barn conversion’.  The clients approached us having seen and heard about our previous record of securing planning permission for outstanding contemporary dwelling designs against some fantastic existing traditional structures.

We quickly worked to build a team of necessary consultants around us including, Ramm Sanderson Consultants who handled Ecology and Habitat surveys and ICIS design who helped with the structural reporting for the existing barn structures.

Acres Architects were appointed to handle the Architectural design, landscape design, interiors and planning consultancy for the project.

With any Grade II building it’s important to be sympathetic to the original structure and design. However, the clients, really wanted to create something special for the additional living space they wanted.

The clients said

“We were looking to create a forever home that reflects our style and tastes, but we also wanted something that delivered a ‘wow’ factor.  A key element of this project was to retain the existing barn buildings but add a modern twist to the rest of the living space. We love having family and friends over, so a really nice and functional outdoor space was absolutely essential. This is something we’ve dreamed of for years and we had some ideas of what we liked, and what we didn’t like so it was important to find the right architects practice to help us realise that dream.

From our initial meeting with Edward and through getting to know the team at Acres Architects we knew straight-away that they would be perfect for such an ambitious project. The team took the time to really understand our requirements and discussed what we wanted. They also shared some of their ideas to get us thinking about things we’d not considered. We were very excited to find a team that clearly shared our vision and passion for this project, and it was a simple choice to instruct them to handle the majority of aspects of design.

When we first saw the original designs and concepts we were blown away. I’m so excited to move onto the next stage of the project, it’s starting to feel more real now. “It’s always amazing to work with clients who are flexible to allow us to be creative with a project like this. We knew we wanted to be sensitive to the original barn section of the building but our clients gave us the brief to add a modern flair to the site. It’s the type of project we love because with this much scope we can really push the boundaries and deliver what we feel is an amazing property which perfectly blends the traditional and the modern to give a fantastic living space for the family.

The connecting ‘atrium’ between the existing and new buildings start the transition really nicely and really give a huge ‘wow’ factor with double height ceilings and floor to ceiling glass. The delicate curve beautifully links the two buildings and allows light to flood through the property. The flow of the building has been carefully considered to allow people to make the very most out of the available space. One thing I’m particularly really pleased with is the outdoor decking area which is surrounded by its own shallow body of water giving the outdoor space an elegant and serene feel.

Now that the planning application has been approved, we’re busy preparing the next phase of this project to meet the client’s timeline, as such we have our Architectural Technologists creating the technical drawings required to pass building regulations. In addition to this we’ll also create a construction tender so the client can appoint a contractor for the build.”
